What Is the Best Time of Day to Photograph a House?
By Shannon Ortega, Full Frame Media
Light changes how a house looks. The right time of day can make the exterior glow.
Think about which way the house faces
- The front of the home looks best when it is lit by the sun, not in shadow.
- A home facing east is brighter in the morning.
- A home facing west is brighter in the afternoon.
Avoid harsh midday light when you can
Midday sun can cast hard shadows. Softer morning or afternoon light is often more flattering, but a good photographer can work with most conditions.
Weather matters
Blue skies help, but bright overcast days can also work well. Exterior shots depend on the weather, so a shoot may need to move.
What you can do
- Tell us which way the home faces when you book.
- Move cars off the driveway and put trash cans away.
- Turn on lights inside and out.
