Aerial photos show things a ground-level camera cannot: the size of the lot, how the home sits on it and what is nearby. Used well, they help a buyer understand a property before they ever visit.

When a drone is worth adding

• Larger lots and land. Aerial views show boundaries and open space.
• Pools, ponds and outbuildings. They show how the features relate to the home.
• Waterfront and view properties. A drone shows the setting.
• Neighborhood context. Buyers can see proximity to roads, parks and town.

When you may not need one

A condo or a home on a small, tightly packed lot may not gain much from aerial photos. In that case, spend the budget on strong interior photos or a video.
